French influencers Océane El Himer and Léa Mary were detained in Dubai on Wednesday, September 22, according to media reports. El Himer, a former contestant on the reality TV show "Les Marseillais," has over one million Instagram followers. Léa Mary, a former contestant on "Les Princes et les Princesses de l'amour," has more than two million followers on the platform. Both were reportedly arrested for "possession and consumption of a psychoactive substance," which refers to drugs that can alter a person's mental state. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has strict laws regarding narcotics. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the importation, consumption, production, or possession of narcotics or substances classified as such—even in the smallest amounts—is completely prohibited and subject to severe punishment. These laws are enforced strictly, with penalties that can include lengthy prison sentences. Under UAE law, the possession or consumption of narcotics, regardless of the quantity, carries a minimum prison sentence of two years. This sentence can be increased to up to fifteen years in cases involving aggravating circumstances or if the individual has a prior criminal record. Additionally, those who provide premises or spaces that facilitate drug use can face up to five years in prison. The most severe penalties apply to drug traffickers, who can be sentenced to the death penalty. The UAE also holds individuals accountable for not reporting information that could prevent drug-related crimes. People who have knowledge of such activities and fail to report them can be prosecuted for complicity. This legal framework reflects the UAE's strict stance on drug-related offenses and its commitment to enforcing these laws without exception.
