Cyclist suffers multiple spinal fractures

Tadej Pogacar, a cyclist with UAE Team Emirates XRG, suffered three fractured vertebrae after a fall during La Vuelta, a major cycling race in Spain. The injuries were discovered through scans two weeks ago, revealing fractures in the C7, T1, and T2 vertebrae, which are more severe than initially thought.

Pogacar reflects on accident’s severity

Pogacar shared in an interview with The Athletic that the realization of having three fractured vertebrae reminded him of how serious the accident on August 29 was. He noted that vertebral fractures are often overlooked compared to more visible injuries like broken collarbones, but they carry similar risks and require careful treatment.

Recovery brings physical and mental challenges

Despite the severity of his injuries, Pogacar no longer feels pain and can perform most daily activities normally. However, he must be cautious not to fall off his bike or lift heavy objects with his left arm or neck. He also experienced dizziness when standing or lowering his head, which made everyday tasks difficult during recovery.

Emotional struggle during early recovery

Pogacar described the first two weeks of recovery as mentally tough, saying he felt very down and was not pleasant to be around. His wife, Urska, was reportedly upset by his depression and feelings of emptiness. He said he had to fight daily to regain his motivation, with some days filled with determination to engage in physiotherapy and other recovery activities, and other days marked by a lack of desire to do anything.

Return to training brings renewed focus

Now back on his bike, the double world champion is preparing for the future with more serenity. While the accident has left its mark, Pogacar is gradually regaining his strength and confidence through home trainer sessions and daily rehabilitation, focusing on the road ahead.
