Playground Games, a video game studio founded in 2010 with a focus on creating high-quality driving games like the popular Forza Horizon series, is now working on a reboot of Fable, a classic British role-playing game (RPG) that first launched in 2004. Originally developed by Lionhead Studios for the original Xbox, Fable was known for its deep storytelling and player choice, allowing gamers to shape the world and their character’s morality. However, Microsoft, which acquired Lionhead in 2009, eventually shut the studio down in 2016 after insisting it convert Fable into a multiplayer game, which was never completed. Ralph Fulton, co-founder of Playground Games and the new game director for the Fable reboot, has said this project has made him think about games in ways he never has before. He believes it will have a similar effect on players, offering a deep and meaningful experience. Despite the success of Playground’s driving games, the team sees this as an opportunity to prove they can excel in a different genre. After Microsoft’s Xbox division mentioned Fable as a potential project, Playground Games partnered with Xbox in 2017. The studio then needed to build a large team, bringing in developers from around the world, many of whom moved solely because they were fans of the original Fable series. At the Gamescom expo in Germany, a demo of the reboot showed gameplay with a strong sense of physicality—characters swinging heavy hammers or drawing bows with a crisp, satisfying sound. The game’s writing is described as sharp and witty, with dialogue that reflects British humor and awkwardness. The team aimed to avoid traditional fantasy tropes, opting instead for a modern tone and phrasing. The game also features a cast of well-known British comedians, including Peep Show’s Matt King, who plays a retired hero guiding players through a haunted mine with sarcastic wit. Other actors, like Richard Ayoade and Natasia Demetriou, contribute to the game’s unique voice, with Ayoade improvising parts of his scenes and Demetriou adding a touch of British humor with her character’s dialogue. At the heart of the Fable reboot is the idea of meaningful player choice, a core element of the original series. The main story is designed to feel low-stakes, allowing players to explore and experiment in the world of Albion. Only the climactic ending locks players into the main narrative. Fulton emphasized that this final choice will challenge players to reflect on their own values and decisions, with real consequences for their actions. The project carries significant weight for both nostalgic fans and Xbox, as it was Microsoft that ended the original Fable series. Since the reboot began in 2016, the gaming industry has faced major changes, including the rise of live service games, a global pandemic, and significant layoffs at Xbox. Fulton believes Fable is more than just a game—it’s seen as essential to Xbox’s identity and to the broader world of video games.
