Ulysses as a Substitute Teacher

Ulysses, the main character in the film Normal, describes himself as "sort of a substitute teacher," according to the British director Ben Wheatley's movie, which was released in the United States several months ago and is now available in France via streaming on Prime Video since October 8.

Setting of the Film

The film centers on a sheriff who comes to serve as an interim after the death of his predecessor in a town in Minnesota named Normal. The residents are initially welcoming, according to The Wall Street Journal, which notes that "their town has certainly had better days, but overall, the atmosphere is relatively good."

Turning Point in the Story

Everything seems to be as smooth as a sheet of paper until Ulysses meets at his motel a couple, Keith and Lori, who attempt to rob the local bank the next day. "Everything then starts to go wrong," writes the critic from The Wall Street Journal.

Cast and Mystery Elements

The film features a solid cast, both leading and supporting. What secret looms over the town? And what will be the connection with the Japanese underworld—does Normal open with a settling of accounts between yakuza?
