Electric vehicles are increasingly making their mark in the luxury car market, where smooth performance and quiet operation are highly valued. Among the high-end brands embracing this shift is Bentley, which is set to debut its first fully electric vehicle, the 2027 Torcal. This new SUV is designed to be spacious and is built on the same platform as the electrified Porsche Cayenne. Bentley’s move signals a strategic effort to attract a new audience of affluent buyers who seek both luxury and sustainability in their vehicles. A preproduction version of the Torcal, heavily camouflaged, was recently spotted undergoing testing. The vehicle’s interior and exterior were partially covered with thick black cloth, with holes cut for seatbelts and other components. Engineers used false body panels to maintain the car’s shape while concealing its true design. While smaller than Bentley’s current Bentayga model, the Torcal still promises generous interior space. The focus during development has been on delivering a smooth, isolated ride, achieved through two-chamber air suspension and adaptive dampers that adjust the flow of oil to fine-tune comfort and handling between different driving modes. The Torcal’s steering system is designed to return to the center confidently, enhancing driver control and comfort. A simulated engine note was also a key development, inspired by Bentley’s classic V8-powered Turbo R from the 1980s. This sound, created using a musician’s drum beat and carefully mixed, aims to replicate the subtle imperfections of a traditional internal combustion engine. The throttle response is tuned to mimic the torquey delivery of a V8 engine, providing auditory feedback that helps reduce motion sickness during long drives. Inside the Torcal, Bentley continues its tradition of craftsmanship, even in the digital age. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen feature a background image of a crystal decanter, hand-cut by Cumbria Crystal, showcasing natural light refractions and reflections. Sustainability is a core focus of the vehicle, with clear goals for using circular materials and green aluminum. The door cards are made from a fully recyclable natural fiber, and the interior can be optioned with Merino wool from Fox Brothers, emphasizing the use of renewable resources. The Crewe assembly plant in England is powered by green energy, including solar power, reinforcing Bentley’s commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing. Powering the Torcal is expected to be a high-performance electric drivetrain, delivering over 800 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle is anticipated to weigh nearly 6,000 pounds, with a battery capacity similar to the Porsche Cayenne’s 108 kWh unit. This should provide a range of over 370 miles. The Torcal will also support fast charging, with a peak rate of 400 kW, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes, and adding 100 miles of range in as little as seven minutes. Bentley aims to deliver an authentic luxury experience, blending craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, and the reception of the Torcal will be closely watched after its official debut.
