France Télévisions has confirmed it has no immediate plans to bring back American television series on its channels, according to Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez, who oversees programming for the organization. This decision was made five years ago as part of a broader strategy to prioritize French-produced content. At the 2026 La Rochelle Fiction Festival, Sitbon-Gomez reflected on the past, noting that five years ago, the network broadcast a roughly equal number of French and American series. The shift away from American programming was initiated by France Télévisions' former president, Delphine Ernotte, in 2020, before a regulatory body known as Arcom. At the time, the move was met with criticism, with some observers commenting that France Télévisions seemed to be making a risky choice. The decision was influenced by the challenging economic conditions facing the network at the time. Sitbon-Gomez explained that France Télévisions aimed to focus on international co-productions rather than buying content from overseas. This strategy was intended to help promote French series abroad, although the network has not yet achieved the level of international success it hoped for. The current programming strategy is being carried out during a time of financial limitations, which has resulted in the cancellation of several well-known series, including A priori, Disparition inquiétante, and Face à face. Despite these difficulties, France Télévisions remains committed to its vision of emphasizing streaming content through its online platform, france.tv, and producing French mini-series that are not intended to be renewed for additional seasons. The network is continuing to invest in original French content, even as it faces the challenge of maintaining audience interest and achieving international recognition.
