A right-wing extremist who expressed violent intentions toward Jews, Muslims, and migrants has been sentenced to prison. Ivan Jennings, 46, from Stafford, was found guilty of encouraging terrorism and sharing extremist materials online during a three-month period in 2024. In online chats, he referred to certain groups as “subhumans” and claimed that killing them was “justified and actually needed.” Jennings, a warehouse worker and father of four, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison, with an additional five years on extended licence, at Leicester Crown Court.
During the trial, prosecutors said Jennings had been an active member of at least seven far-right groups on the messaging app Telegram. He joined the far-right group Patriotic Alternative in early 2024 and posted messages suggesting he was in contact with someone planning to use a boat to stop the influx of migrants into the UK. In one post, he claimed that killing “subhumans” was not murder but a justified act of war. He also searched online for motorboat rental services in Dover and expressed interest in using a boat to “take out the dinghy divers,” a reference to migrants arriving in the UK by sea.
Jennings also identified a public event in Manchester celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day as a potential target, stating, “We need to start acting.” He referenced the Christchurch terror attacks in New Zealand, where 51 people were killed, and said, “We need a bigger impact.” In response to a user who criticized the event, Jennings said, “Exactly, we need to start acting to turn the tables.” In another post, he claimed he would go to prison “for making a real change.”
Defence lawyer Oliver Renton argued that Jennings was struggling with deep personal fears after suffering a cardiac arrest at work in 2023. He suggested that Jennings’ isolation and emotional distress led him to adopt extreme and nihilistic views. However, the judge, KC Lockhart, condemned Jennings’ “deeply held abhorrent and racist views,” emphasizing the severity of his actions and the threat they posed to public safety.
