Intrepid Travel, the world's largest adventure travel company, unveiled its annual “Not Hot List” on Wednesday, 9 September, spotlighting 10 destinations that are often overlooked by mainstream tourists. These locations have fewer visitors compared to nearby or similar spots but are ready to welcome more travelers. The list aims to encourage tourists to explore places that offer unique experiences without the crowds. Three of these destinations are within a few hours’ travel from the UK, offering accessible alternatives to more well-known European spots. One of the highlighted destinations is Alonnisos, a lesser-known Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Unlike the more popular islands of Crete or Santorini, Alonnisos is home to one of Europe's largest marine protected areas, where endangered Mediterranean monk seals live. The island can only be reached by ferry or private yacht, keeping it less busy than nearby Skiathos. This allows for a more responsible, nature-focused tourism experience. Liepāja in Latvia, which was named the European Capital of Culture for 2027, is another entry on the list. It features a five-mile stretch of white-sand beach, often called the “Baltic alternative to the Mediterranean.” Unlike other beach destinations, Liepāja has fewer tourists, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the shoreline. In Sweden, Dalsland is recommended for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. With a new rail link, visitors can now easily access the region for activities like kayaking, hiking, and gravel biking. Other destinations on the list include Mestia in Georgia, known for its outstanding hiking and skiing opportunities, and Canada’s Whitehorse, which offers community-led experiences such as Yukon kayaking and bear-watching. In Sri Lanka, the Pekoe Trail is highlighted for its peaceful hiking trails that support local villages. Meanwhile, Timor-Leste, one of Southeast Asia’s least visited countries, is becoming more accessible due to increased flight connections from Kuala Lumpur and Darwin. In Africa, Samburu National Reserve in Kenya is recommended as a quieter alternative to more famous safari destinations. It is home to the “Samburu Special Five” – rare wildlife including the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra – as well as the Big Five. Finally, the Northern Highlands in Jordan and Chile’s Carretera Austral are included as underrated destinations in popular countries, offering unique landscapes and road trip experiences.
