Abandoned cats found in Poitiers

In the Couronneries neighborhood of Poitiers (Vienne), teams from the SPA, Les Chats de la rue, and Sacpa discovered 50 cats abandoned in an apartment in early October.

Cats in poor condition

The cats, aged between four months and two years, were found in deplorable conditions with no access to food, water, or litter, and the floor was covered in excrement. The owner, who was threatened with eviction, had abandoned the animals several weeks prior.

Concerns about the cats' health

Valérie Toulisse, president of Les Chats de la rue, stated that many of the cats were weakened, scared, and some were very thin and dehydrated. A neighbor had been regularly feeding the cats, but the association had initially been alerted to only a dozen cats.

Official response to the situation

The Animal Protection Society reported on social media that they found "weakened animals, some very thin and dehydrated, living in deplorable hygiene conditions, without water or food available." In early October, teams recovered fifteen of the fifty cats, with twelve taken in by the Poitiers SPA and three entrusted to Les Chats de la rue.

Plans to rescue remaining cats

An intervention to recover the remaining cats was scheduled for Monday, October 26. The Poitiers SPA confirmed it would take in six new cats. Valérie Toulisse suggested the owner may have suffered from Noah's syndrome, a condition that leads to compulsive accumulation of an excessive number of companion animals.
