Starting in 2028, the RE2020 regulation will require new buildings to significantly reduce their carbon impact. For architects and construction teams, this means that the choice of materials has become a crucial factor in meeting these standards. However, selecting the right materials involves more than just choosing eco-friendly options—it requires understanding their performance, usage conditions, and limitations. To help professionals navigate these challenges, BuildingLab is offering a training course titled RE2020 - Threshold 2028: Choosing and Prescribing Bio-based Materials on September 28 and 30, 2026. This course aims to equip participants with the knowledge needed to effectively integrate bio-based materials into their projects. Bio-based materials, such as wood, straw, hemp, wood fibers, and cellulose wool, offer several benefits, including carbon storage, improved summer comfort, better vapor migration, and enhanced thermal performance. However, these materials are not interchangeable with conventional alternatives. Their suitability depends on factors such as the type of project, construction methods, wall composition, humidity exposure, fire safety requirements, and insurance conditions. The training course will help participants understand the different categories of bio-based materials and identify the most appropriate solutions for various applications. Reducing a building's carbon footprint involves more than simply replacing traditional insulation with a bio-based alternative. It requires a comprehensive understanding of how each material contributes to the goals of RE2020 and how it will perform within the building. The course covers a range of topics, including the regulatory and insurance frameworks, the supply chains of bio-based materials, the role of carbon storage in RE2020 calculations, thermal phase shift and summer comfort, vapor migration and humidity management, fire resistance, and the conditions for prescribing materials based on specific projects. The goal is to enable participants to make informed, technically sound choices that align with both regulations and insurance requirements. The training is led by Aymeric Prigent, a sustainable construction engineer and expert in straw-based construction. He brings extensive experience in designing energy-efficient buildings, including Passivhaus projects, and has worked on public, industrial, and social housing developments. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical examples and case studies drawn from real-world projects. It is designed for a wide range of professionals, including architects, project managers, local authorities, construction economists, engineering firms, and construction companies. The training will take place on September 28 and 30, 2026, with two sessions of 3.5 hours each, totaling 7 hours. It will be conducted online via Teams. The fee is 490 euros per participant, and the course may be eligible for funding through FIF PL or OPCO, depending on the participant's circumstances. Attendees will receive training materials and a personalized certificate. The course is also included in the BuildingLab subscription, which provides access to all training courses, conferences, and documents for twelve months.
