Straw is gaining recognition as an ecological building material due to its renewable, biodegradable, and locally sourced nature. A webinar titled Low-Carbon Construction: Designing with Straw, offered by BuildingLab.fr, delves into the use of straw in modern construction. The practice of using straw in construction began in Nebraska, USA, around a century ago, after the invention of the agricultural bale press. Since the late 19th century, this method has been used to build homes, schools, and even a church, sometimes incorporating load-bearing straw structures. Interest in straw construction resurged in the 1980s in North America and later spread to France. Straw is appreciated for its insulating properties, ability to manage moisture, local availability, biodegradability, cleanliness, and cost-effective production. In Paris’s XIXth arrondissement, the Ferme du Rail, a neighborhood solidarity facility, was designed by Grand Huit Architectes using wooden frame buildings combined with straw insulation and an additional layer of recycled cotton insulation. This project emphasizes urban agriculture and the use of organic waste from vegetable production. The design reflects a commitment to environmental care and human well-being, meeting today’s sustainability goals. BuildingLab.fr offers a training program titled Low-Carbon Construction: Focus on Straw, designed to help architects fulfill their continuing education requirements. The program covers various construction methods using straw, the regulatory framework known as RE2020, and insurance considerations. It is intended for project owners, local authorities, architects, project managers, construction economists, engineering firms, and construction companies. The training is led by Aymeric Prigent, a sustainable construction engineer, straw trainer, and expert with the French Straw Construction Network (RFCP). Prigent is also a PassivHaus designer, offering a comprehensive perspective on building envelope design. The webinar is conducted through Microsoft Teams after registration and payment on the BuildingLab.fr platform. Registration can be done online or by contacting Valérie Cheyban at 06 80 84 32 29 or by email v.cheyban@bebackmedias.com. The next webinar is scheduled for October 13 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and October 16, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Subscribers can request more information or watch replays.
