A man from Florida accidentally shot his wife and their 4-year-old daughter while cleaning his gun at their home in Deltona over the weekend, according to local authorities. The incident happened just before 10 a.m. on Saturday when the man was trying to clear his handgun before heading to a shooting range, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported. The man was not injured in the incident.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the father holding his daughter, who had visible injuries to her chest and arm. The mother was inside the home with a towel covering a gunshot wound to her leg. Both the mother and daughter were conscious and alert, according to authorities. First responders quickly applied tourniquets to both victims and used a chest seal on the young girl to help control bleeding.
The girl was airlifted to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital, while the mother was taken to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital for further treatment. The father told investigators that the gun fired accidentally as he was preparing to go to the shooting range, resulting in one shot hitting both his wife and daughter. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said that the evidence collected during the investigation supports the conclusion that the shooting was accidental.
As of Sunday, no criminal charges had been filed in connection with the incident. The current medical conditions of the mother and daughter were not immediately available, but both were reported to be in stable condition following the initial treatment provided by first responders.
