Rangers have confirmed the signing of Kevin Kelsy, a 22-year-old Venezuelan striker, from Portland Timbers for an undisclosed fee. The club has also secured the services of Algerian winger Badredine Bouanani on a season-long loan from Bundesliga side Stuttgart. These transfers were announced as the Scottish transfer window closed on Thursday, bringing the total number of new signings for the Ibrox club this summer to 14 players.
Kelsy has signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year. The left-footed striker, standing at 6ft 4in (1.93m), has made 63 appearances in his career, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists. He joined Portland Timbers in January 2025 after being sold by Shakhtar Donetsk, where he had spent two title-winning seasons in Ukraine. In his first season with the Timbers, Kelsy made 16 appearances, scoring 10 goals and contributing three assists, despite the team finishing 11th in the Western Conference and 17th overall in Major League Soccer.
Bouanani, 21, joined Stuttgart from Nice in early 2023 for around £13 million. However, he made only nine starts and 13 substitute appearances last season for the Bundesliga side, who finished fourth in the league. He has not featured for Stuttgart this season. The Algerian international previously played for Nice and had a loan spell at Lorient, as well as representing France at youth level before switching allegiance to Algeria in 2023. Bouanani was part of the Nice team that lost 4-1 to Rangers in the Europa League two years ago and also played in a Europa League play-off against Celtic last season.
Kelsy’s journey to professional football began in Venezuela with Mineros de Guayana, where he made his debut at 16. To reach the club, he had to travel 500 miles from his hometown of Valencia, avoiding checkpoints during a nationwide travel ban by hiding in a mining truck. He scored five goals in 24 appearances with Mineros before moving to Shakhtar Donetsk, where he played a key role in two title-winning seasons during Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. After a brief spell in Uruguay with Boston River, Kelsy moved to Major League Soccer on loan with Cincinnati in 2024, scoring six goals in 23 games before being signed by the Timbers, where he has since scored 19 times in 65 appearances.
