French retail giant GiFi seeks judicial reorganization, selling 32 stores to Grand Frais amid fierce competition and financial struggles.
GiFi seeks judicial reorganization
The French retail chain GiFi, known for selling home decor, furniture, and gardening items at low prices, announced on October 20 that it is seeking judicial reorganization. This process allows companies in financial trouble to restructure their debts under legal protection.Challenges from competition and financial strain
GiFi has been struggling with competition from discount retailers like Action or B&M, as well as Chinese online platforms such as Shein and Temu. These challenges, combined with significant financial difficulties over the past four years, have led to its current situation.Sale of 32 stores to Grand Frais
As part of its efforts to reduce costs and replenish funds, GiFi sold 32 of its stores to the hypermarket group Grand Frais. This sale was finalized on October 15, 2025, and is seen as an opportunity for GiFi, which is currently expanding with about 20 new stores each year.Strategic location benefits for Grand Frais
The locations of the GiFi stores being sold are in suburban and densely commercial areas. This allows Grand Frais to expand its customer base beyond the outskirts of cities, where its presence was previously limited.Store transitions begin in June
According to the specialized magazine LSA, the transition of all these stores began on June 1. Internally, officials stated that each month, four to five stores close and are taken over by Grand Frais. The process involves works lasting at least three to four months.Opening dates for new Grand Frais stores
The first openings of the new Grand Frais stores are likely to be officially announced in November and continue until the end of the year. Some of the 17 stores operated directly by Grand Frais will open in late 2026 or early 2027, with specific addresses and dates provided.Management mandates for 14 stores
In addition to the 17 directly operated stores, 14 stores will be managed under mandates. These include locations in Bias, Hendaye, and Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, among others, with opening dates ranging from the end of 2026 to the beginning of 2027.Final store acquired from Tati
The last store acquired from Tati, located in Bayonne, will be part of Gifi 48, a group that includes stores previously owned by Tati. This acquisition completes the 32-store sale to Grand Frais.Additional store closures
In addition to the sale of 32 stores, GiFi decided in April 2025 to close 11 stores. However, only 10 stores ultimately closed, as the store in Neuville-en-Ferrain was saved through lease renegotiations and temporary closure for renovations.List of definitively closed stores
The stores that have definitively closed include locations in Thiais, Stains, Pontault-Combault, and others across various regions. Each closure reflects the ongoing restructuring and financial challenges faced by GiFi.
