TotalEnergies, a major international energy company, has formed a partnership with Mistral, a prominent French artificial intelligence firm, to develop specialized AI models aimed at improving the exploration, analysis, and development of oil and gas reservoirs. The collaboration seeks to leverage AI's potential to enhance decision-making and data analysis in complex energy operations. Patrick Pouyanné, TotalEnergies' chairman and CEO, emphasized that fields such as exploration and reservoir engineering are key areas where AI can generate significant value.
The partnership involves an investment of over 100 million euros over three years. The AI models will process large volumes of data to provide experts with multiple scenarios for new exploration opportunities. These tools are also expected to optimize the operation of existing projects and extend their operational life, all while ensuring that human experts remain central to decision-making.
To support this initiative, TotalEnergies and Mistral will establish a joint scientific laboratory. This lab will bring together Mistral’s AI specialists and TotalEnergies’ geoscientists to work on advanced AI techniques. The project will utilize a computing power of nearly 10 petaflops—equivalent to 10 million billion operations per second—alongside TotalEnergies’ extensive geoscientific data and nearly a century of subsurface expertise. The AI models will use agent-based technology, which can divide complex tasks into smaller components, evaluate different possibilities, and present scenarios to engineers.
The AI models will be developed within a European digital ecosystem to ensure the protection of TotalEnergies’ strategic data and intellectual property. While no specific timelines or financial targets have been disclosed, the partnership reflects a broader trend of integrating AI into traditional industries to improve efficiency and sustainability.
