Peugeot has reintroduced its legendary GTI badge with the e-208 GTI, an all-electric version of its popular 208 model. The GTI label, traditionally linked to Peugeot's sporty, front-wheel-drive cars, now appears on an electric vehicle, raising questions about whether it can still be considered a true GTI. The e-208 GTI is powered by a 281-horsepower electric motor, producing 345 Nm of torque, which is sent to the front wheels. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h. The car has been extensively modified by Peugeot Sport, including a lowered body, widened track, a specific anti-roll bar on the rear axle, a limited-slip differential, and hydraulic bump stops.
Visually, the e-208 GTI includes red accents on the grille, wheel arches, and body elements, with specific 18-inch wheels and a rear diffuser. Inside, the car features a red carpet, a nod to the 205 GTI, bucket seats with GTI inscriptions, and a steering wheel combining leather and Alcantara. The interior also includes red stitching, aluminum pedals, and red seat belts. A digital display provides performance metrics such as power, torque, and battery temperature.
The e-208 GTI has a 51 kWh battery, providing a claimed autonomy of 354 to 375 km depending on tire choice. Charging is available at 11 kW AC and 100 kW DC, with a 20 to 80% charge taking 27 minutes. However, dynamic driving increases energy consumption, with a test showing a consumption rate of 25 kWh/100 km. The car's price is listed at 42,900 euros, with potential discounts and bonuses reducing the effective cost.
The e-208 GTI faces competition from other small electric sports cars, including the Alpine A290, Opel Corsa GSE, and Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI. While the e-208 GTI offers more power and a mechanical limited-slip differential compared to some competitors, it has a smaller battery and limited charging speed, which may affect its suitability for long trips. Despite these limitations, the e-208 GTI is praised for its handling, with a firm suspension and precise steering that provide a fun driving experience, especially on winding roads.
