The Meta Quest 3S is a virtual reality (VR) headset that shares many components with the Meta Quest 3, but it includes cost-saving features to make it more affordable. It uses the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor and offers the same range of games and applications as the Quest 3. However, the Quest 3S features a lower-cost screen and lenses, which helps reduce its price. During AliExpress's Local Day, the 128 GB version of the Quest 3S is available for 253.71 euros, significantly below its original price of 329.99 euros. This version is sold by a third-party seller based in France and is available with a discount code, FRLD30, which reduces the price by 30 euros. The headset is ideal for those who want to experience VR and mixed reality without investing in a more expensive model. The Quest 3S has the same 8 GB of RAM and Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor as the Quest 3, ensuring compatibility with the same games and apps. It includes color mixed reality features, which allow users to see both their real surroundings and virtual elements at the same time. A dedicated button lets users switch between real and virtual environments with a single press, whereas the Quest 3 requires a double tap. Meta claims the Quest 3S has a slightly longer battery life of 2.5 hours compared to the Quest 3's 2.2 hours. The headset uses its built-in cameras for movement tracking, eliminating the need for a PC or external sensors. It can display content at up to 120 Hz, which is useful for fast-paced games. Mixed reality allows users to place virtual objects in real spaces, such as a living room, without losing sight of the actual environment. According to a disassembly by iFixit, the Quest 3S includes two infrared sensors that help it function better in low-light conditions. The Quest 3S uses the same screen resolution as the Meta Quest 2, which is 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye. It uses Fresnel lenses instead of the pancake lenses found in the Quest 3, which can affect the visual experience. The field of view is also narrower—96 degrees compared to the Quest 3's 110 degrees. Additionally, the Quest 3S lacks a depth sensor, which is present in the Quest 3 and helps with more precise mixed reality interactions. These changes may not appeal to users who prioritize image quality and immersive visuals. However, the Quest 3S retains the core features of the Quest 3, including the same processor, Touch Plus controllers, and game library. At launch, the Quest 3S was priced 220 euros lower than the Quest 3, making it a more budget-friendly option for first-time users. The strengths of the Quest 3S include its powerful Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, the ability to operate without a PC or cable, color mixed reality with a dedicated toggle button, a battery life of 2.5 hours, and a display that can reach 120 Hz. However, its limitations include the lower-resolution screen inherited from the Quest 2, Fresnel lenses, a narrower field of view, and the absence of a depth sensor. The headset is sold by a third-party seller on AliExpress with a limited history, which users should consider before purchasing. The discount code FRLD30 reduces the price by 30 euros for purchases of 239 euros or more. At 253.71 euros, the Quest 3S is much cheaper than its original price of 329.99 euros. It offers an accessible way to experience Meta's standalone VR with the same core features as the Quest 3, but with some compromises in image quality. For a first-time VR headset, this balance of price and functionality may be ideal. Before purchasing, users should check the seller's reputation, as the headset ships from France and AliExpress offers a 90-day return period. Gamers who prioritize visual clarity and field of view may prefer the Quest 3, while those seeking a more affordable entry into VR may find the Quest 3S to be a suitable choice.
