Apple has released tvOS 27, the latest operating system for compatible Apple TV 4K devices, introducing support for Hi-Res Lossless audio in Apple Music. This format offers higher quality sound with a resolution of up to 24 bits/192 kHz, which is better than standard lossless audio. The update is available for the second-generation Apple TV 4K (2021) and third-generation Apple TV 4K (2022), but not for older models like the 2015 Apple TV HD and the first-generation Apple TV 4K from 2017, which will remain on tvOS 26. These older devices will no longer receive future updates, and Apple has marked the 2015 Apple TV HD 32 GB as obsolete, with support ending on March 31, 2026. While Apple has not officially announced a new set-top box, there has been ongoing speculation about a more advanced successor to the current Apple TV models. The tvOS 27 update removes a previous restriction that limited Apple TV devices to standard lossless audio, now allowing compatible models to access Hi-Res Lossless audio through Apple Music, provided they are connected to an audio system that supports it. However, the real-world impact of this feature may be limited, as many televisions and soundbars operate at a lower sampling rate of 48 kHz. Apple has also not confirmed whether third-party music apps like Qobuz or Tidal can take advantage of the higher 192 kHz sampling rate. In addition to the audio improvements, tvOS 27 includes several other enhancements. These include faster app launches, a more responsive Control Center, quicker AirPlay connections, and new features in Apple Music such as AutoMix and Crossfade. The update also adds support for video content in the Podcasts app, Thread 1.4 support for smart home devices, 4K recordings from Apple Home cameras, and new settings for remote controls and accessibility features. These updates aim to improve the overall user experience and expand the capabilities of Apple TV devices for both media consumption and smart home integration.
