Wizards of the Coast has announced the re-release of the Commander Warhammer 40K decks, which were first introduced in 2022 as part of the "Universes Beyond" series. These decks were among the first preconstructed Magic: The Gathering decks to feature characters and themes from a universe outside of Magic. Originally released in limited quantities, the decks have since become highly sought after in the secondary market, with resale prices on platforms like TCGplayer reaching several hundred dollars. A representative from Wizards of the Coast told IGN that a small re-print of the decks has been produced and that they will soon be available through distributors and stores. Fans and retailers in the Wizards Play Network (WPN) are advised to check with their local distributors for availability, as stock may vary by region. Each of the four decks is centered around a specific faction from the Warhammer 40K universe. Ruinous Powers features the Chaos Space Marines, Tyranid Swarm focuses on the alien Tyranid race, Necron Dynasty is a mono-black deck based on the ancient Necron machines, and Forces of the Imperium highlights the human-led Imperial forces. Prior to the decks' launch, Magic: The Gathering lead designer Mark Rosewater mentioned in a blog post that there are currently no plans to create Magic cards that would fit within the Warhammer 40K universe. However, he noted that the company retains the ability to do so, if needed, on a card-by-card basis. Wizards of the Coast has not confirmed whether the fully metallic "Collector's Edition" versions of the decks will also be reprinted, nor has it revealed the price of the reprinted decks. Initially, each deck was sold at a suggested retail price of $59.99. While the re-release may help reduce resale prices, the company described the addition of new copies as only a "small" re-print, meaning the impact on the secondary market could be limited. The Warhammer 40K franchise is currently in a period of heightened interest, with the release of Dawn of War IV scheduled for December and Total War: Warhammer 40K expected in 2024. Additionally, a cinematic universe based on Warhammer 40K is being developed with Henry Cavill involved. Meanwhile, Magic: The Gathering will release six expansions in 2027, with three already confirmed. Other expansions from the "Universes Beyond" series are also expected to be announced in the coming months.
