Healthcare investment for security forces

The Ghanaian government has announced plans to invest in the healthcare needs of security forces, including expanding the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the welfare and operational capacity of law enforcement personnel.

Housing project for police officers

The government also plans to construct 250 housing units for police officers to reduce overcrowding in barracks. This project is part of a larger strategy to improve living conditions and retention within the police force.

Funding and timeline for hospital expansion

President John Dramani Mahama outlined the investment during the inauguration of a new 85-bed hospital building on October 13, 2026. The allocated budget includes 200 million cedis for the hospital's expansion, which will be included in the 2027 budget.

Hospital upgrades and past challenges

The hospital expansion aims to increase its capacity from 106 beds to over 300 beds, including a 12-bed intensive care unit, an emergency center, and advanced medical imaging equipment. The project was originally started 22 years ago but was halted due to disputes with the construction company and rising costs.

Recent housing developments

The housing initiative follows the inauguration of a 320-unit complex for police officers in Tesano, the capital, in July 2024. This new project aims to continue improving housing availability for law enforcement personnel.

Growth in police force numbers

As of April 2024, the Ghanaian police force had 46,116 officers, compared to 33,213 at an earlier unspecified date. This increase highlights the need for improved infrastructure and resources to support the growing workforce.

Additional equipment for security forces

President Mahama also announced the delivery of 40 additional armored vehicles, following the delivery of 50 units in December 2025. The government plans to enhance personal protective equipment for officers involved in operations to ensure their safety.
