Chris Cantrill has won the Edinburgh Comedy Award for his show Rewildling, often called the "Oscars of live comedy" due to its prestige in the stand-up and comedy performance world. The award includes a £10,000 prize, which Cantrill plans to use to repair his chimney and take his wife and 10-year-old son on a long-awaited family holiday abroad. He had already booked the trip but noted that the prize money would allow him to proceed with the plans. Cantrill is also a writer for SNL UK, the British version of the popular American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Cantrill mentioned that he hopes to take his son to an SNL UK recording, as the child is a fan of the show and its cast member, Jack Shephard. The Edinburgh Comedy Award has a history of launching the careers of notable comedians like Frank Skinner and Bridget Christie. Cantrill sees the award as a way to attract more attention to his work in the future, though he emphasized that it does not guarantee success, but it does create more opportunities. This is Cantrill's first win after being nominated three times before, including twice with his comedy duo Delightful Sausage, and once for his solo show Easily Swayed in 2024. This year marked his fourth nomination and first victory, as he beat over 500 eligible acts competing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Rewildling, the show that earned him the award, is a comedic take on a mystery story centered around Cantrill’s move to the Northumberland countryside and the tragic felling of the famous Sycamore Gap tree. Despite receiving a three-star review for the show, Cantrill remained unfazed, stating that reviews are just one person's opinion and should be used as a tool rather than a definitive measure of success. Cantrill's family was present in Edinburgh to celebrate his win, including his wife, son, and parents. He described the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as both beautiful and intense, highlighting the magical yet overwhelming experience of the event.
