Government expands speed camera plan

The French government is planning to significantly increase the number of speed cameras on roads, especially in urban areas, with the goal of doubling their presence by 2027. This initiative is part of a new law that gives local authorities more power to install and manage road monitoring equipment.

New cameras target more violations

The upcoming cameras will be more advanced, capable of identifying a broader range of traffic offenses. These include using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seat belt, and noise violations from motorcycles, in addition to traditional violations like speeding and running red lights.

Uncertainty remains about implementation

While the law provides local authorities with greater flexibility, it does not ensure that all communities will adopt speed cameras. The practical effectiveness of the cameras may also be limited, as some behaviors detected by the technology may not automatically result in fines. Clear enforcement rules and driver protections will need to be defined by authorities.

Cameras to focus on high-risk areas

The expansion of speed cameras is expected to be most impactful in areas where speeding is a frequent problem. Local governments may choose to install cameras near schools or in residential neighborhoods to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
