In the rapidly evolving world of electric bicycles, manufacturers are pushing the limits of motor power and efficiency. Taiwanese company Giant has taken a significant step forward with its new SyncDrive Pro 4 motor, designed for VTTAE (a French term for off-road electric bicycles). This motor delivers 120 Nm of torque and 850 W of power, outperforming some of its competitors in certain aspects. For context, torque is a measure of rotational force, and higher numbers mean more power for climbing or accelerating. The SyncDrive Pro 4 is lighter than many of its rivals, weighing just 2.4 kg, compared to 2.59 kg for the Avinox M2S and 2.7 kg for the Bosch Performance Line CX-R. While the Avinox M2S has a higher maximum torque of 150 Nm, it only reaches this level in a special "Boost" mode, whereas Giant’s motor maintains its full power across all settings. The SyncDrive Pro 4 also offers a range of assistance levels, which can be adjusted through the Giant RideControl app. The assistance can go up to 500%, which means the motor can provide five times the rider’s own power. This is less than the 600% offered by Bosch and the 800% by Avinox, but it is still substantial for off-road use. The motor responds quickly to each pedal stroke, with a reaction time of 0.28 seconds, which is crucial for maintaining control on rough terrain. Additionally, Giant has introduced a traction control system that adjusts the motor's assistance in real time to prevent wheel slippage when the ground becomes slippery. The SyncDrive Pro 4 is aimed at serious off-road cyclists, and it will be used in the Giant Trance Advanced E+ and the Liv Intrigue Advanced E+ models. These bikes are designed with precise integration of the motor into the suspension system, ensuring a smooth ride. The motor is paired with a new in-house battery that has a capacity of 840 Wh, which is more than the previous EnergyPak Smart battery. This battery is lighter, at 3.7 kg compared to 4.35 kg, and is still based on lithium-ion technology, not the newer semi-solid type. The battery can provide between 115 and 205 km of range on flat terrain, depending on the assistance level. Giant has also introduced a "wallbox" charging station, similar to those used for electric cars, which can be mounted on the handlebar for convenience. The charging process prioritizes stability over speed, with the Smart Charger X reaching 80% in 3 hours and 10 minutes, and fully charging in 5 hours. The bike’s electronics include a new "RideControl Go Lux" display, similar to systems used by Bosch and Avinox. This 2-inch screen offers a customizable interface, and it is paired with a minimalist control unit placed under the rider’s left thumb for easy access.
