An increasing number of video game publishers are releasing remakes of classic titles, including Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, and Silent Hill, as a way to tap into nostalgia and reduce financial risks in a mature and struggling industry. According to Corentin Benoît-Gonin, a journalist for the specialized magazine Canard PC, the video game industry is experiencing a crisis, with the market no longer growing in volume in Europe, the United States, and Japan. As a result, publishers are seeking ways to minimize the risks of new projects, especially given the rising costs of game development. Remakes are seen as a safer option compared to launching new intellectual properties, which can take three to four years to develop and may not be profitable. Nintendo has released several significant remakes, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Starfox, while Final Fantasy VII is set to release its third part of a remake. Other examples include Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Rayman Legends, and Tomb Raider. These remakes often target audiences with both nostalgia and purchasing power, creating a profitable combination. According to Benoît-Gonin, successful remakes are not just about updating graphics but also reimagining gameplay and adapting the original spirit to modern ideas. For example, Resident Evil remakes have evolved from fixed camera perspectives to more dynamic gameplay, while Silent Hill: Townfall introduces a first-person perspective, emphasizing survival horror over action. Remakes can also serve as a marketing tool, helping publishers expand their intellectual property strategies. For instance, the release of The Last of Us: Remake coincided with the launch of the The Last of Us television series, and Mario Galaxy remasters were released alongside the Super Mario movie. Similarly, The Legend of Zelda remakes were launched around the time of a related film. While some view remakes as a way to reduce risk, others argue that they can be creative and innovative, offering new ways to experience classic games. However, the line between a remake and a spin-off can be blurry, as some remakes introduce significant changes in gameplay style and setting.
