Loire Tourism reported 2.8 million overnight stays between June and August 2026, a 2% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth was largely driven by French visitors and a particularly strong month of June. Overnight stays by French visitors rose by 3%, while those by foreign visitors increased by 1%. June saw a notable surge, with French visitors' overnight stays climbing by 13% compared to June 2025. Local visitors from Isère, Puy-de-Dôme, and Rhône experienced increases of 19%, 11%, and 5% respectively, while visitors from Paris saw a 17% rise. The Loire region remains a popular local destination, with 56% of French visitors coming from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Foreign visitors accounted for 16.5% of all visitors, up from 14% in 2025, with Belgians, Germans, and Dutch making up a significant portion. A total of 5.1 million day trips were recorded during the period. Walking, heritage, and relaxation were the main reasons for visitors to come to the Loire, cited by 52%, 43%, and 41% respectively. Professionals in the tourism sector had mixed experiences, with 52% considering their season as good to very good. Satisfaction rates were higher in accommodations (57%) and restaurants (62%), but activity providers were more cautious, with only 20 to 25% declaring themselves satisfied. Challenges included limited purchasing power and high temperatures, which influenced booking behavior, with last-minute bookings increasing by three points. Weather played a significant role in the timing of stays and activities, affecting both when people traveled and what they did while there. The Gîtes de France Loire network welcomed 9,434 people from July 4 to August 29, a decrease of 13.8% compared to the same period in 2025. Overnight stays dropped to 56,105, a decrease of 9.2%. However, the average cost for a stay in a gite reached 764 euros, up 11.7% compared to the previous year, and the average duration of stays increased to 6.45 days, up 5.7%. This indicates a decline in the frequency of visits but an increase in the value of each stay. Heatwaves influenced tourism practices, leading to adaptations such as increased attention to shade, pools, and air conditioning in campsites, and modifications to visiting hours at some sites. Weather also affected reservations and activity schedules. Loire Tourism emphasized the need to adapt equipment and offerings and to strengthen prevention against natural risks. For September, 58% of professionals in the Loire region expressed confidence, compared to 45% at the regional level. The "seasonal wings" concept is being considered as a strategy to better distribute tourist activity throughout the year.
