pCloud, a cloud storage service, has introduced three online tools for creating and editing documents directly within its platform. These include a word processor, a spreadsheet application, and a presentation tool, offering users the ability to work on files without needing to download or install any software. The interface of these tools is designed to be user-friendly, similar to other popular office suites, making them accessible to both casual and more experienced users.
The tools have been in internal testing since August and are now available for use. The spreadsheet application, for example, resembles well-known tools like Excel or Google Sheets, offering basic formatting options such as font styles, colors, borders, and alignment. It also includes a formula bar for entering calculations. The word processor provides standard formatting features like bold, italic, and bullet points, while the presentation tool allows users to create slides with title areas, an insertion menu, and layout options.
All three tools operate directly in the web browser and automatically save changes as users work. However, there are some limitations. Files created with these tools are initially saved at the root of the storage space, and while they can be moved to a specific folder, they cannot be placed in the encrypted area known as pCloud Crypto, even if it is unlocked. This means users may need to sync the document locally before moving it to a secure location.
The feature was first noticed by users on Reddit through screenshots shared by German users. pCloud has since confirmed that the office suite is being rolled out to its users. With this update, pCloud joins other major players in the cloud office space, such as Google with its Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and Microsoft with its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Online through OneDrive. Apple also offers Pages, Numbers, and Keynote via iCloud. Other services like Infomaniak and Proton have also integrated or developed similar tools to provide a full office experience in the cloud.
