Fujifilm has introduced the Instax Pal 2, a compact instant camera that draws inspiration from the popular Kodak Charmera. The new model breaks away from the original Instax Pal's "golf ball-like" design and offers a retro aesthetic with two color choices at launch: black with silver trim or white. This new design aims to blend vintage charm with modern functionality.
The Instax Pal 2 is equipped with twin displays — a 1-inch LCD screen on top and a simple optical viewfinder with a cutout for framing shots. It also includes a wind lever that adds an Instax frame to photos, a film simulation dial with five picture styles (each offering six unique effects), and a slide-out USB-C port for charging and connecting to a smartphone to upload images. The camera has enough built-in memory to store 100 photos, which are 10MP and captured using a small 1/3.06-inch sensor. Additional features include a micro SD card slot, Bluetooth for wireless connectivity, and support for Instax Link printers. At the same time as the camera’s launch, Fujifilm also announced a new Wide Link 2 printer.
Priced at $170 in the U.S., £144.99 in the U.K., and AU$249 in Australia, the Instax Pal 2 is significantly more expensive than the Kodak Charmera, which costs around $35 in most regions. While the Instax Pal 2 continues the playful and nostalgic design seen in other Instax models like the Mini Evo Cinema, some industry observers believe its higher price point may limit its sales compared to the more affordable Charmera or the screen-less Camp Snap cameras.
Despite its higher cost, the Instax Pal 2 offers a unique blend of retro design and modern technology, appealing to instant camera enthusiasts who value both aesthetics and functionality. Whether it will achieve the same level of popularity as previous models remains to be seen, but it clearly positions Fujifilm as a strong contender in the instant photography market.
