Aya Books, a Lille-based bookstore specializing in romance novels ranging from dark romance to romantasy—a genre that blends romance with fantasy or science fiction—plans to open a new location in Marseille by the end of 2026. The new store will be situated at 11, rue de l'Arc in the 1st arrondissement of Marseille and will cover 240 square meters, four times the size of the original store in Lille, which is 65 square meters. The new location will follow a bookstore-café model but on a much larger scale than the Lille store, offering a more expansive space for customers to relax and enjoy books. Céline Flips, one of the co-owners of Aya Books, noted that there is strong demand for romance books in Marseille and that the city’s larger population should support increased visits to the new store. The new location will host a variety of events, including book clubs, creative workshops, and author meet-and-greets, with greater capacity than the Lille store. In addition to romance books, the store will also carry thriller novels, a genre that many romance readers enjoy. The new Aya Books in Marseille is expected to open during the 2026 holiday season. While Céline Flips will remain in Lille, her co-owner, Ayma Flips, will work part-time in the southern city. The two booksellers are considering hiring a full-time employee and an intern to help manage the larger store. They have also submitted a request for a honor loan through the Initiative Marseille Métropole network and have begun procedures with the city of Marseille to secure a subsidy for setting up the store in a priority neighborhood. The expansion reflects the growing interest in romance literature and the success of the original store in Lille. By opening in Marseille, Aya Books aims to bring its unique blend of romance and related genres to a new audience while fostering community engagement through events and a welcoming environment.
