A French streaming service, Canal+, has reportedly introduced a method that allows users to possibly lower their subscription costs by canceling and then renewing their commitment-based subscription, according to a recent report. The technique involves canceling the subscription, which enables users to continue accessing content until the end of the commitment period. After that, they can renew their subscription with a potential discount. This strategy has been tested with Canal+ Ciné Séries, a subscription that initially costs 41 euros per month with a 24-month commitment period ending in April 2026. Following cancellation, users reportedly received a 20% discount upon renewal, lowering the monthly rate to 33 euros for 12 months. However, after this discounted period, the price would return to 41 euros per month, and the commitment period would extend to 24 months, ending in September 2027. This means that while users can save money in the short term, they may end up paying the original price again after the discounted period. The process can be repeated after one year, potentially allowing users to lower the price again when they renew their subscription. The method may also be applicable to Audible, Amazon’s audio book service, which reportedly offers new deals when customers cancel their subscriptions. This suggests that similar tactics could be used across various subscription-based services to take advantage of promotional pricing. This approach highlights a common strategy among consumers looking to reduce recurring costs by exploiting the way subscription services handle renewals and promotions. However, users should be aware of the long-term implications of such tactics, as the savings may be temporary.
