Microsoft's Dual Console Strategy

In response to Sony and its PS5, Microsoft launched two distinct Xbox consoles in 2020: the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X. These consoles share next-gen technology but are tailored for different user needs and budgets.

Xbox Series S Specifications

The Xbox Series S is an entry-level console designed for 1440p rendering up to 120 frames per second. It is compact, lacks a Blu-ray player, and has a 512 GB version priced at 499.99 euros, with a 1 TB version available for 599.99 euros. It is the smallest Xbox ever made, measuring 27.5 cm x 15.1 cm x 6.5 cm.

Xbox Series X Specifications

The Xbox Series X is a more powerful console capable of native 4K rendering at up to 120 frames per second. It is larger, with dimensions of 30.1 cm x 15.1 cm x 15.1 cm, and includes a 4K Blu-ray player. It is priced at 799.99 euros with the player or 749.99 euros for the digital edition.

Design and Cooling Differences

The Xbox Series S is designed to be used horizontally and features a simpler cooling system due to its smaller size and less powerful hardware. In contrast, the Series X is intended for vertical placement and requires a more complex cooling system, making it less convenient for some living room setups.

Performance and Price Differences

The Xbox Series X has 12.15 TFLOPS of graphics power, compared to 4 TFLOPS on the Series S. It also has more memory and storage, with 16 GB of GDDR6 and 1 TB of internal storage. The Series X is significantly more expensive, with a 799.99 euro price tag for the Blu-ray version and 749.99 euros for the digital edition.

Pricing Adjustments and Subscription Options

Microsoft increased the price of the Xbox Series S on August 1, 2026, and removed the Series X 2 To Galaxy Black from its catalog due to supply chain issues. To help buyers, Microsoft offers the Xbox All Access program in France, allowing customers to finance a console and 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with zero interest.

Choosing Between the Consoles

The Xbox Series S is ideal for users who prioritize cost and the Xbox Game Pass subscription, offering next-gen performance at a lower price. It is more compact and discreet, making it a good fit for those who do not need a Blu-ray player. For those with a 4K TV or a need for a physical disc player, the Xbox Series X is the better choice, despite its higher price.
