TGV M train launch delayed multiple times

The TGV M, a new high-speed train developed by SNCF and Alstom, will launch on November 6 after several delays and extensive testing. The initial plan was for the first units to enter service at the start of 2024, but technical issues and testing have pushed the date back.

Official attendance at the launch

The inauguration of the TGV M will be attended by Philippe Tabarot, France’s Minister of Transport, but President Emmanuel Macron will not be present, according to the French business newspaper Les Échos.

Improved features of the TGV M

The TGV M will serve the most frequented line in the network, connecting Paris to Marseille. It will offer more seats, improved comfort, and a modular design allowing for adjustable numbers of cars per train set. Each train can carry 740 passengers, about 100 more than previous models, and will reduce maintenance costs by nearly a third.

Delays affect international plans

The TGV M’s commercial launch is nearly three years behind schedule, which has also delayed SNCF’s plans to enter the Italian market. The Italian market entry is now expected in the second half of 2028, instead of autumn 2027.

Order and deployment timeline

In 2018, SNCF ordered 130 TGV M units from Alstom for over 4 billion euros, with 13 expected to be in operation by the end of 2023. However, only a fraction of these units will be operational by the scheduled date.
