This morning, Tuesday, October 6, Savencia, a major dairy company in France, announced it was breaking an agreement it had signed with the OP Les 3 Rivières in November 2025. The agreement concerned the formula used to calculate the price of milk supplied by the organization's members. The producer organization, which represents dairy farmers, expressed shock at the decision. Savencia is once again at the center of attention in the French dairy sector. The company informed the Loire Valley OP Les 3 Rivières that it is renouncing the agreement, which was meant to become a long-term framework contract. According to Sophie Godet-Morisseau, general director of Savencia Ressources laitières, the agreement was "barely signed" when it was challenged at the beginning of 2026 by the producer organization with demands "far removed from this agreement." The 240 million liters of milk supplied by the 331 members of OP Les 3 Rivières currently feed four production sites: in Mayenne, the Perreault Cheese Factory and the Pontmain site (which handles ingredients), and in Maine-et-Loire, the Meslay-du-Maine and Cornillé-les-Caves cheese factories. Savencia stated that the new milk price formula proposed by Les 3 Rivières would lead to an average increase in the milk price of "36 €/1,000 l," which would "completely shift us from the market." According to Godet-Morisseau, "Without competitive milk, we have no sustainable markets." The notice period is eighteen months, with the relationship with the OP ending on April 15, 2028, as will the milk collection from the 331 members. Savencia expressed regret over the decision, stating it does not align with their way of managing commercial relationships with OPs. Godet-Morisseau noted that six framework contracts were signed in 2026 with organizations including Lactéa, FMB Ouest, APLBG, OPLGO, CFVA, and Bressor. Some of these signatures are part of a process to bypass the OP Lait Baie & Bocages (formerly Ouest’Lait). For OP Les 3 Rivières, the decision was described as a "cold shower." Anthony Daubert, president of the OP Les 3 Rivières, stated that they had never questioned the agreement but believed some changes were necessary. The OP defends a price formula composed half of the producers' cost price and half of the industrial product mix. They did not approve of the base price of October at 410.44 €, stating that it was the application of the calculation formula signed in November 2025, but they also requested a "price tunnel" of 8 €/1,000 l in their favor to account for the current economic difficulties of the producers. This request was refused by Savencia, which the OP described as a "lack of consideration." The producers want to take time to seek advice and opinions before deciding their response. Daubert concluded that "Savencia is denouncing a relationship because we have a disagreement. It is serious."
