Volkswagen introduces new electric SUV model

Volkswagen has announced the launch of the ID.Cross Trend 37 kWh in France for 27,995 € in 2026. This electric SUV is based on the thermal Volkswagen T-Cross and is priced below the 28,000 € threshold, marking a key development in the electric vehicle market.

Battery specifications and performance

The ID.Cross Trend 37 kWh uses a smaller lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery with a 37 kWh capacity. This battery is less costly and known for its stability and long life, but it holds less energy per weight compared to the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) 52 kWh battery used in higher trims.

Range and practicality

According to Volkswagen, the ID.Cross Trend 37 kWh has a range of up to 324 km on the WLTP cycle. Real-world estimates suggest a range of about 230 km, which is suitable for daily urban and suburban trips but may be limiting for longer journeys.

Features and technology

The model includes features like front and rear parking assistance, smartphone integration via "App Connect," a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a central screen up to 12.9 inches in size. It also comes with air conditioning, basic driving assistance, and standard fast DC charging.

Charging capabilities

Fast DC charging is standard, with the vehicle capable of charging from 10 to 80% in about 23 minutes at 88–90 kW. On a domestic or workplace AC charging station, the built-in 11 kW charger allows a full charge overnight, which is especially useful for a smaller battery.

Target audience and pricing

The ID.Cross 37 kWh is aimed at urban drivers who primarily travel on typical home-to-work routes. It is priced about 4,900 € less than the 52 kWh version, which offers an additional 100 km of WLTP range.

Government incentives and competition

In France, the CEE grant (Energy Transition Tax Credit) can further reduce the cost based on income. Compared to the Renault 4 electric, which is priced at 29,990 € with a 40 kWh battery and a 308 km WLTP range, the ID.Cross Trend is slightly cheaper.

Higher trim levels and added features

Higher trim levels like Life and Style include features such as "Connected Travel Assist" or a Harman Kardon audio system, but these come at a significantly higher price than the base model.
