Release date confirmed for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4, the latest installment in the real-time strategy series, is set to release on PC on December 3rd. According to a new game trailer and an exclusive interview with IGN, director Jan Theysen explained that Space Marines will be few in number but nearly indestructible at the beginning of the game.Campaign features elite Space Marine factions
The solo campaign will feature the Blood Ravens and the Dark Angels alongside the Primarch Lion El'Jonson, as shown in the latest trailer. The design of the Space Marines required significant resources from King Art Games, with Theysen emphasizing a focus on micro-management of rare and powerful units.Space Marines are rare but powerful
According to the lore of the Games Workshop universe, the Emperor's troops will be an absolute elite on the battlefield. A mechanical choice made by King Art Games requires careful attention to each soldier: "You control relatively few units, which are expensive, but very effective. You really don't want to lose a [Space Marine]."Strategic challenge of limited numbers
This deliberate numerical disadvantage will be compensated by total domination during the early skirmishes, Theysen ensuring that no "starting unit of other factions can defeat a Space Marine." The difficulty will therefore consist of managing its presence on the map: "The challenge is as follows: wherever you are, you win, but you cannot be everywhere."Space Marines have unique combat advantages
To compensate for this lack of manpower and to hold resource points, generals can rely on the emblematic arsenal of the Astartes. Beyond the surgical strikes allowed by the Drop Pod Modules and Thunderhawks from orbit, the Space Marines will benefit from an automatic out-of-combat healing mechanic particularly annoying in multiplayer modes. "You can simply hold your position, let your unit self-heal, and wait for reinforcements to appear," notes the director.Gameplay emphasizes versatility and specialization
In terms of evolution, the studio has sought to recreate the flexibility of the very first Dawn of War. Rather than moving straight toward obtaining a devastating ultimate unit, players will have to manage the detailed specializations of their squads and vehicles. Whether it is equipping a Dreadnought with a Gatling cannon to purge enemy infantry or a plasma rifle to penetrate armor, the doctrine of the Space Marines will first rely on versatility and adaptation to the given situation.Four distinct heroes available for play
Theysen detailed the quartet of heroes available for the faction. The Blood Ravens will be represented by the sniper Cyrus (focused on infiltration) and the Archivist Jonah Orion (dedicated to area damage). On the side of the Dark Angels, players will find Captain Astoran, described as the most resistant unit in the game in Terminator armor, as well as Chaplain Ezrael, mounted on his motorcycle and able to rally allied troops.
