Election date set for Vaucluse president

The election for the future president of the Vaucluse departmental council has been confirmed for Monday, November 2. This follows the departure of Dominique Santoni, who will leave her position after winning recent senatorial elections.

Departure due to legal requirements

Despite the law on non-overlapping mandates, the new Vaucluse senator is required to leave the presidency of the department, a role she has held since 2021. This law prevents individuals from holding multiple public offices simultaneously.

Christian Mounier may run for president

According to Dauphiné Libéré, Christian Mounier, currently the deputy president in charge of agriculture in the Vaucluse, will soon run for the presidency. He is also described as a loyal supporter of Dominique Santoni.

Opposition seeks unity on a candidate

It remains to be seen whether an agreement will be reached among the ranks of the opposition to present a common candidate. La Marseillaise reported that the left-wing departmental officials had met for the first time in five years on October 6 to agree on a candidate.

Interim president in place

Currently, Thierry Lagneau, the first vice-president and mayor of Sorgues, is acting as president of the departmental council since October 19. He assumed the responsibility of setting the date of the vote.

Dominique Santoni remains active locally

Dominique Santoni is stepping down from the presidency but remains active in local political life. The new Vaucluse senator has the possibility of remaining a departmental councillor for the Apt canton. She appreciates this sector, having been mayor of the town of Apt for seven years, from 2015 to 2021.
