Performance explores childhood movement
A new breakdance performance titled Baby Freeze explores the universal experience of learning to walk through the lens of childhood play and movement. Conceived by Congolese choreographer Yves Mwamba, the piece was inspired by observing his son attempt the breakdance move known as the baby freeze.Dancers highlight falling and impulse
The performance features B-girl Laurakle (Laura Maillard) and B-girl Sophia (Sofia Denise), who alternate in a solo performance that incorporates the burlesque and poetic aspects of falling. The performance is set in a small cardboard world enhanced by lighting and features a "lesson in gravity" through rhythmic construction, with elements of support, stops, repetitions, balances, and imbalances.Themes of joy and perseverance
The work brings together themes of falling and impulse, highlighting the joy of trying, failing, and trying again. It emphasizes the value of persistence and the natural process of learning through movement, making it accessible and engaging for a wide audience.Collaborative creative team
The performance is part of a collaboration between Yves Mwamba and the B-girls, with dramaturgy by Amélie Poirier, scenography by Cécile Rolland, sound creation by Uriel Barthelemi, lighting and general rigging by Cléo Konongo, and digital musical instrument creation by Vincent Martial.Production and presentation details
