Meta has announced a new feature that will allow AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business, a service that helps companies communicate with customers through WhatsApp. Previously, developers had to use several different tools and services, including Meta’s Developer Console, Business Manager, API reference, and an editor. Now, they can simply ask their preferred AI agent—such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT—to handle the setup process by describing the tasks they need completed.
This change is made possible by a new tool called the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, which stands for Model Context Protocol. This server connects AI coding agents directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta is expanding its use of MCP servers beyond managing ads and monitoring app settings to include one specifically designed for helping businesses get started with WhatsApp. Other major tech companies like PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, and Google also use similar MCP servers to let AI agents interact securely with their services.
With this new system, the AI agent can handle many of the routine tasks involved in setting up a WhatsApp Business account. These include creating the account, adding and verifying a phone number, registering for access to the Cloud API, and checking the business’s Terms of Service. Businesses can also use the AI agent for other tasks, such as describing a messaging template they want to create or editing an existing one. Additionally, they can test messages and webhooks, and monitor potential issues that might have gone unnoticed before, such as payment methods or Business Verification.
During the setup and configuration process, Meta’s existing Meta Social Technologies MCP can also be used. This server helps developers discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors. By integrating AI agents into the setup process, Meta aims to simplify the onboarding experience for businesses looking to use WhatsApp for customer communication.
