France Télévisions will air a mini-series titled 14 juillet in 2026-2027, adapted from the short story La retraite du juge Wagner by Nicolas Mathieu, which was published in the collection Rose Royal by Actes Sud in 2021. The adaptation, produced by Mother Production (Aurélien Larger and Simon Trouilloud), will consist of four episodes, each 52 minutes long. The screenplay is co-written by Nicolas Mathieu, Fanny Sidney, Alexandre de Seguins, and Nicolas Peufaillit. The story follows François Wagner, a broken former judge dealing with the recent suicide of his daughter, and Alizée, a teenager, as they investigate the death of Lydie and the disappearance of Aurore, Alizée’s mother, a former drug addict. Their search exposes the hidden dangers within what appears to be an ordinary community.
This adaptation is part of a series of projects based on Nicolas Mathieu’s work, including Leurs enfants après eux (adapted in 2024) and Connemara (adapted in 2025). Another project, 2020, nos vies confinées, a 90-minute documentary by Nathalie Amsellem and Serge Turquier, will also be broadcast by France Télévisions, although the exact air date is still unknown.
Meanwhile, other adaptations are in development within the France Télévisions group, including two investigations into sensitive topics: the agro-industrial sector and the judicial handling of incest cases. Additionally, a mini-series based on the novel Petite sale by Louise Mey will air starting October 1 on France 3.
Other literary adaptations include a version of the book On aboie en silence by Gringe, set to air starting October 8 on France Télévisions, and Le Rouge et le Noir by Stendhal, which will be available in full on france.tv starting August 21 and will air on France 2 from August 31.
In addition, Netflix is working on adaptations of Icebreaker by Hannah Grace and Mal de amores by Ángeles Mastretta, while HBO plans to release a new season of Harry Potter with intervals of less than two years between episodes.
