The new Smart #2, which will replace the popular Fortwo, is set to be a significant upgrade in terms of range and performance. It is scheduled to be unveiled at the **Paris Motor Show**, but details have already been released in a series of teasers. The vehicle is based on a new platform developed in China, called ECA. One notable feature carried over from the Fortwo is the Tridion safety cell, a structural framework designed for maximum safety. However, unlike the previous model, this element is not as prominent in the design. Nearly 80% of the structure is made from high-strength steel, aiming to provide "exceptional rigidity," with the car able to support a load of more than four tonnes on its roof. In terms of safety features, the Smart #2 includes no fewer than seven airbags. The powertrain, which includes the engine, power electronics, and control systems, is compactly integrated into a single unit known as an "11-in-1" system. This design allows more space for the battery, which is a key component of the car's performance. The battery capacity of the Smart #2 is 35.8 kWh, which is larger than that of the Twingo, a similar-sized electric vehicle with a 27.5 kWh battery. This increase in battery size contributes to the Smart #2's impressive range of at least 290 km under the WLTP (World Light Duty Vehicle Test Procedure) standard. This is significantly more than the 130 km range of the older Fortwo and is uncommon for a vehicle of its size. The Smart #2 also promises fast charging capabilities, with the ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. This makes it suitable for longer journeys, although the car is designed with urban environments in mind. Its turning diameter of 6.95 meters allows for easy maneuvering in tight city spaces. The vehicle will feature a five-arm independent rear suspension and a 50/50 weight distribution, which is ideal for handling and stability. Additionally, the car will have narrower tires at the front and wider tires at the rear, a configuration Smart says will enhance steering precision and front-end maneuverability, while improving grip and stability at the rear. The Smart #2 represents a major leap forward for the brand, combining advanced engineering with practical urban mobility. With its improved range, safety features, and performance, it is positioned to be a strong contender in the small electric vehicle market. The unveiling at the **Paris Motor Show** will be a key moment for the brand, as it looks to capture the attention of both critics and consumers alike.
