In May 2026, Garmin introduced two new running watches: the Forerunner 70 and the Forerunner 170. The Forerunner 70 is the more affordable option, replacing the Forerunner 55, which was previously recommended for beginners. The Forerunner 70 is available on Amazon for 229 €, a reduction from its original 249 € price. The Forerunner 170, which is more expensive at 299 €, includes advanced training features, better tracking capabilities, and a larger screen. The Forerunner 70 has a 1.2-inch AMOLED touch screen with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels, which provides more vivid colors than the MIP screen used in the Forerunner 55. The watch includes physical buttons for easier use during running, and it can display up to 8 data points at once, such as pace, distance, and heart rate. It is 42.6 mm in size, weighs 40 grams, and is water-resistant up to 5 ATM, making it suitable for swimming or showering. Garmin claims it can last up to 13 days on a single charge under normal use, and 23 hours with GPS enabled. However, battery life decreases to 16 hours when using multiple satellite navigation systems. If the AMOLED screen is kept on continuously, the battery is expected to last around five days. The Forerunner 70 brings features once only available on more expensive models, like Garmin Coach, which creates personalized training plans based on individual goals and adjusts them according to performance and recovery. These training plans take into account sleep quality, recovery status, training load, and VFC (heart rate variability measured during sleep) to determine whether a new training session is appropriate. The watch also includes the Body Battery feature, which estimates recovery levels, and sleep tracking that allows users to monitor their sleep score and different stages of sleep. It supports over 80 different sports profiles. At this price, the Forerunner 70 offers essential training tools for 70 € less than the Forerunner 170. However, the discounted price on Amazon might not last long. For users who want a straightforward watch to track runs and recovery without the need for multisport features, the Forerunner 70 is more than sufficient.
