The Garmin Forerunner 265, once hailed as the top running watch for most people in 2023, is now available at a reduced price on Amazon. This makes it a more appealing choice compared to Garmin’s newer model, the Forerunner 170. The Forerunner 265 is currently priced at AU$498, which represents a 38% discount from its original cost. This price is also about AU$50 lower than what was offered during recent sale events like EOFY and Prime Day. The Forerunner 265 features advanced dual-band GPS technology, which provides more accurate location tracking compared to single-frequency systems. It also offers up to 13 days of battery life, more size options, and on-watch music storage. The watch includes a touchscreen AMOLED display, which is a significant upgrade from the monochrome display used in the previous model. This display gives the Forerunner 265 a look and feel similar to popular smartwatches like the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch. In contrast, the Forerunner 170 uses single-frequency multi-GNSS tracking, which is technically less advanced than the dual-band GPS in the Forerunner 265. The Forerunner 170 is only available in a single 43mm size, while the Forerunner 265 comes in two sizes—46mm and 42mm (265S)—offering more flexibility for different wrist sizes. The Forerunner 170 is priced at AU$479, or AU$549 for the version that includes music storage. While the Forerunner 170 is a strong contender with good performance and smart features, the Forerunner 265’s current price and additional features may make it a better value for many users. In treadmill testing conducted by colleague Matt Evans, the Forerunner 265 was found to be highly accurate. However, it faced some criticism in the past for its increased price compared to its predecessor and slightly worse battery life, which was linked to the switch to an AMOLED display. The current discount helps alleviate these concerns, making the Forerunner 265 an even more compelling option for runners and fitness enthusiasts.
