A new label for second-hand toys in France aims to boost trust and safety, addressing hygiene and compliance concerns as the market grows.
New label for second-hand toys in France
A new label has been introduced in France for second-hand toys to ensure they meet safety, hygiene, and quality standards. This initiative aims to address public concerns about the reliability of used toys, particularly as the market for second-hand toys continues to expand.Consumer concerns about second-hand toys
According to a 2025 survey by Circana and Ecomaison, 37 percent of French people who avoid buying second-hand toys worry they might be incomplete, while 30 percent are concerned about their cleanliness. These concerns have prompted efforts to create a certification system for used toys.Label requirements and verification
The Rejouons Solidaire network launched the label on October 8, 2026, in Paris. To qualify, organizations must follow guidelines covering hygiene and safety, traceability, social impact, and environmental impact. Toys are checked for cleanliness, functionality, safety compliance, and completeness, with audits conducted by Ecocert.Early adopters of the label
Three organizations have already received the label: Rejoué, Enjoué, and Rebond. These are social enterprises and insertion workshops that refurbish toys. More members of the network can apply, with audits expected to begin in 2027.Growth of the second-hand toy market
The French second-hand toy market has grown significantly, with sales increasing by over 14 percent in value and 12 percent in volume in 2025. Despite this growth, second-hand toys still account for only 7.3 percent of total toy sales in France.Label’s broader impact
Beyond improving consumer trust, the label supports environmental goals by reducing waste and promoting the reuse of toys. It also helps structures that provide job training by sorting, cleaning, and restoring toys. The initiative aligns with a national law requiring public institutions to increase their purchases of reused products, including toys and games.
