A few weeks before the Paris Motor Show, which runs from October 12 to 18, Renault hosted a preview event on September 24, 2026, to showcase one of its concept cars: a bold and muscular reinterpretation of the classic Renault 8 Gordini. During this event, Renault's head of design, Alexandre Malval, participated in a roundtable discussion. Malval joined the brand nearly nine months earlier and previously worked at Mercedes. He spoke about the ongoing transformation within Renault’s design studios, focusing on the growing influence of generative AI—technology that uses algorithms to create images, designs, or other content based on input data.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept was designed using traditional methods, according to Malval. Despite the industry's shift toward faster, more automated design processes, this concept car stands out for its old-school approach. Measuring 4.12 meters, the vehicle blends vintage aesthetics with modern touches. Interestingly, it was created with minimal use of algorithms, relying more on classic design techniques. However, generative AI played a key role in securing approval from Renault’s management. AI was used to generate highly realistic images of the car in complex environments, such as rainy night scenes, which are difficult to model quickly using traditional methods.
Generative AI is also being used to create short films that animate the concept car, which serve as an effective way for internal teams to communicate and explore creative ideas. This process has moved from traditional sketching to AI models that can generate design variations in minutes. Some tools are even capable of extrapolating the rear of a vehicle based on a sketch of the front. However, the next phase—using AI to instantly generate 3D sketches—is currently hindered by data confidentiality concerns related to cloud computing.
Malval emphasized that AI will not replace human creativity. He explained that the role of designers is evolving from executing manual tasks to guiding the creative process. While AI can produce many design options, only human designers can provide original intent. According to Malval, drawing remains essential as it is how designers think and communicate ideas. Without an initial sketch, AI cannot function effectively. “Drawing is not just a representation, it is how we think,” he said, underscoring the importance of traditional design methods in shaping AI-assisted projects.
