In 2024, the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show captured attention with the R17 Restomod concept, developed in partnership with designer Ora Ïto. This concept was a fully electric reinterpretation of the classic Renault 17, a 1970s model known for its boxy, utilitarian design. The R17 Restomod brought the car into the modern era with electric power, while preserving its nostalgic charm. Renault plans to continue this approach in 2026 with the Renault 8 Gordini Concept, another electric show car but one that will be developed entirely in-house. Unlike the R17, which was based on a real car, the R8 Gordini Concept starts from scratch, reimagining the original car’s design language with a contemporary twist. The original Renault R8 Gordini was a sportier version of the R8, modified by Amédée Gordini, a French racing engineer, between 1964 and 1970. It became a favorite among drivers for its performance and elegant design. The 2026 concept pays homage to this legacy but expands on the original's dimensions. It is significantly longer, wider, and slightly lower than the original R8, giving it a more imposing presence. While it retains classic Gordini elements like the blue accents and double white lines, it updates the design with modern features such as full LED headlights and larger 19-inch front wheels (20-inch at the rear). The concept also removes rear doors and lowers the body’s profile, making it look more aggressive and futuristic. Inside, the R8 Gordini Concept maintains the essence of the original with a minimalist approach. There are no screens or digital interfaces, and the dashboard is a reimagined version of the original, featuring traditional gauges and aluminum accents. The central console is adorned with knobs for air conditioning and gear shifts, giving it a retro yet refined feel. The car features only two seats, both upholstered in high-quality materials like Alcantara and velvet, emphasizing comfort and style. Despite its luxurious interior, the concept’s technical details remain sparse. Renault mentions a 270-horsepower electric motor, a significant jump from the original R8 Gordini’s 95 horsepower, but no further information is provided. While the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is a striking design, it appears to be more of a showpiece than a production vehicle. Renault has not indicated any plans to bring it to market, suggesting it will serve primarily as a display at the Paris Motor Show, which opens on October 12, 2025. Alongside the R8 Gordini Concept, the Renault stand will also showcase the redesigned Mégane E-Tech, updates to the Scénic electric, and the new R5 range. While the R8 Gordini Concept may not have a future beyond the show, Renault has hinted that there could be other surprises in store. Fans of the brand are advised to keep an eye on future announcements.
