Milestone in BMW M production

BMW M has produced its one millionth High Performance sports car, a significant achievement in the brand's history. The milestone was marked by the creation of a special edition BMW M3 G80 Competition xDrive in Fire Orange III, produced at the historic Munich plant.

Munich plant and model significance

The one millionth BMW M was produced at the Munich plant, which is undergoing a transition to full electric production by 2027. The M3, a central model in the M lineup, has played a major role in this milestone, with nearly a quarter of the one million vehicles being M3 models.

Ceremony and special edition details

During an internal ceremony, Peter Weber, site director, handed over the one millionth BMW M to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M. The special edition M3 G80 Competition xDrive is a four-door sedan with the distinctive Fire Orange III color.

Transition to electric vehicles

The Munich plant is preparing for the end of thermal model production in 2027, following a 650 million euro investment to modernize a third of the facilities. The first electric M3, based on the Neue Klasse platform, will be assembled there with a multi-motor propulsion system.

Future models and production plans

A future mild-hybrid M3 with a six-cylinder S58 engine is also planned but will be produced elsewhere. BMW notes that the one million figure includes only High Performance models, not the M Performance variants.

History and growth of BMW M

The M division began in 1972 with the 3.0 CSL and has since evolved through various models, including the M1, M5, Z3 M, and M2. Sales of BMW M and M Performance models in 2025 reached 213,457 units, a 3% increase from 2024, with the M2 becoming a best-seller.

Market impact and legacy

Despite being a niche market, the total number of BMW M vehicles produced over more than fifty years approaches the annual sales of Toyota's Corolla, highlighting the division's long-term influence and success.
