Adobe has completed its acquisition of Topaz Labs, a company known for developing AI-powered tools that enhance and restore photos and videos. Topaz specializes in technologies that can sharpen blurry images, improve low-light videos, enlarge AI-generated images, and restore old visual content. Adobe plans to gradually integrate these technologies into its Creative Cloud suite, which includes popular software like Photoshop and Premiere Pro. However, Topaz’s standalone applications will continue to be available separately, maintaining their current brand and support. The acquisition was officially announced on Wednesday, September 23, though Adobe did not reveal the financial details of the deal. Some of Topaz’s AI models, such as Bloom and Gigapixel, are already used in Adobe’s Firefly and Photoshop tools. Additionally, Topaz’s Neurostream infrastructure, which allows AI models to run both on a user’s device and in the cloud, will be incorporated into Adobe’s ecosystem. This infrastructure is designed to improve efficiency and flexibility in how AI tools are deployed. Adobe has emphasized that while integration into its software is planned, it will not specify a timeline or how this might affect pricing for its products. The company has previously shown a strategy of openness while maintaining control, such as allowing third-party AI models, including those from Google and OpenAI, to be used with its Firefly platform. Adobe also provides a connector that enables users to access over 50 creative tools from Claude, an AI assistant developed by Anthropic. By acquiring Topaz Labs, Adobe aims to strengthen its capabilities in photo and video enhancement, ensuring it remains a central platform for optimizing visual content.
