Ford has filed a patent that closely resembles its upcoming all-electric pickup truck, the Ford Fathom. The design highlights a multi-functional front trunk, or "frunk," which can be used to store items like a television. Unlike traditional internal combustion vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) don’t require a large engine, allowing for more flexible storage options. This design takes advantage of that space by offering a large, flat area similar to what’s found in the Ford F-150 Lightning, with a fold-out tailgate that could be used for various purposes, including holding a TV. The TV would presumably be powered by the vehicle’s battery, which is expected to have a capacity of over 300 miles of range, making such usage unlikely to significantly drain the battery. The patent also suggests a swappable hood design, allowing users to replace the top of the hood with different panels. This would enable the placement of items like food or tools on the hood without damaging the vehicle’s exterior finish. To keep these accessories secure, the design likely includes dedicated storage compartments within the frunk, rather than leaving them loose on the floor. The Ford Fathom is expected to be priced starting at around $28,350 (approximately £20,970 or AU$39,540), making it a competitive option in the growing electric truck market. While the patent is not yet a finalized product, it gives a clear look at what the Fathom might offer when it launches in 2027. The design reflects Ford’s focus on combining practicality with innovative storage solutions tailored for electric vehicles.
