Sigma unveils new camera model

Sigma, a company primarily known for its lenses, has released a new camera body called the Sigma FP2. This is the first new camera body from Sigma since the Sigma BF, which was introduced in February 2025.

Design and size of the FP2

The Sigma FP2 is described as the world's smallest full-frame hybrid camera. It measures 112.8 x 69.9 x 41.8 mm, making it 3.5 mm thinner than the previous Sigma FP model released in 2019.

Sensor and performance features

The FP2 uses a 24.5-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS partially stacked sensor. This sensor is the same as the one used in the Panasonic Lumix S1 II. It allows the FP2 to capture up to 20 images per second, with 200 consecutive JPEGs.

Shutter and display features

Unlike the FP, the FP2 does not have a mechanical shutter. Instead, it uses an electronic shutter that reads the sensor line by line. The FP2's screen can tilt 90° upward and 45° downward, and an external electronic viewfinder can be connected via USB-C.

Autofocus and battery life

The autofocus system on the FP2 combines phase and contrast detection, allowing it to recognize people, animals, and birds. The camera also offers improved battery life, promising about 370 photos or 130 minutes of video per charge, which is 30% better than the FP.

Video capabilities

The Sigma FP2 can record video in 6K open gate, which means it films across the entire sensor area. This allows for recropping later in different formats. It can also record in Apple ProRes RAW, but only on an external SSD connected via USB-C.

Comparison with the Sigma BF

The Sigma BF, launched last year, is a completely different model. It focuses on design, made from a single block of aluminum, and has a minimal interface with only three buttons and a dial. It lacks a viewfinder and tilting screen.

Sensor and memory differences

The BF uses a traditional back-illuminated sensor and has 230 GB of internal memory instead of a card reader. It also has a thinner body than the FP2, but it is wider. The FP2 does not have sensor stabilization, only electronic stabilization for video.

Pricing and availability

The Sigma FP2 will be available on November 11 for 2,199 euros for the body only. It will also be sold in a kit with a Sigma 50mm F2 DG Contemporary lens for 2,759 euros.

Lens compatibility

The Sigma FP2 uses an L-Mount lens mount, which means it can be used with Panasonic full-frame lenses or Leica compatible lenses.
