Sigma launches second-gen 35mm F1.4 lens

Sigma has introduced the second generation of its 35mm F1.4 DG II Art lens, tailored for full-frame cameras. It is available in Sony E and L-Mount formats, catering to hybrid camera systems that combine mirrorless and DSLR technologies.

Optical design improvements

The lens includes an optimized optical formula with 15 elements arranged in 12 groups. It features two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) lenses and four aspherical lenses, which help reduce chromatic aberration and improve image quality.

Aperture and focusing capabilities

The lens offers a large maximum aperture of f/1.4, allowing for shallow depth of field and low-light performance. It includes a circular diaphragm with 11 blades and a minimum focusing distance of 280 mm, achieving a maximum magnification ratio of 0.19x.

Weight and design enhancements

Compared to its predecessor, the new lens is lighter, weighing 530 g instead of 645 g, and is shorter in length. It includes weather sealing, a double HLA autofocus motor for faster focusing, and customizable buttons for user convenience.

Pricing and alternatives

The second-generation lens is priced at 999 €, while the first generation is still available for 879 €. Sigma also offers a 35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art at 1499 € and a 35mm F2 DG | Contemporary at 639 €. Competing lenses in the Sony E mount include the Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM at 1699 € and the Samyang AF 35mm F1.4 P FE at 599 €.

Performance and versatility

Testing has shown the lens performs well in sharpness from f/1.4 to f/16, with minimal distortion and chromatic aberrations. Designed for versatility, it is suitable for reportage, portrait, street photography, and landscape, and is noted for its compact size, robust build, and ergonomic design.
