Sigma unveils a new 50mm f/1.4 lens designed for organic, soft imagery, targeting photographers over lab-perfect specs.
Sigma introduces new 50mm lens
Sigma has announced the development of a new 50mm f/1.4 lens, the Sigma 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary, which is part of the I series of fixed focal length autofocus lenses. This lens is designed to provide results that appeal to human perception rather than technical perfection.Lens optical design
The lens features an optical formula with 9 elements distributed in 6 groups, including 3 aspheric lenses and one FD lens. It also includes a diaphragm with 14 blades, which is more than what many high-end optics have offered recently. The lens is capable of a minimum focusing distance of 45 cm.Autofocus mechanism
Sigma has opted for a direct drive rotary motor called RDD (Rotary Direct Drive) to move the entire optical block, which is different from traditional step motors (STM) or linear motors (HLM). This choice results in slower autofocus performance compared to STM and HLM solutions, making the lens less suitable for video.Design and performance goals
Foucauld Prové, general director of Sigma France, stated that the lens was not designed to perform on laboratory tests but to meet the needs of photographers seeking an organic rendering, including great softness on skin. The lens is described as relatively light, weighing 375 grams, and features all metal construction with a focusing ring and depth of field scale.Release and competition
The release is planned for spring 2027, though an official price has not been announced yet. The final results and price will be key factors in determining the potential success of this lens, which is seen as a response to both Leica and Chinese optics companies like TT Artisan.
